The Fundraising Writing Filter is a free custom instruction file for ChatGPT and Claude. Load it once. Every donor letter, appeal, grant narrative, and thank-you it writes passes through a detection-driven editing system that strips AI-detectable patterns before you see the output. Six years of frontline donor communications is what determines which words to ban, which constructions to flag, and exactly how to instruct an AI to write like a development professional. Not a content generator.

What's Inside

What the Filter covers.

AI detection tools measure two things: perplexity (how predictable your word choices are) and burstiness (how much the energy varies across a document). This filter addresses both — plus the structural patterns, banned words, and passive voice constructions that flag your writing before a human even reads it.

Banned Word List

Over 100 words and phrases statistically overrepresented in AI-generated text — some by 900x. Using them in donor communications is like stamping "written by a chatbot" on the page.

Structural Tells

The triplet pattern. The colon-explanation chain. The rhetorical Q&A. The summary paragraph. AI writing has predictable shapes. This section shows you how to break them.

Passive Voice

Passive voice hides who did what, softens impact, and adds unnecessary words. The filter catches it in main clauses and subordinate clauses — including the ones that survive a first pass.

Perplexity & Burstiness

The actual math behind AI detection tools. Perplexity is word predictability. Burstiness is energy variation across a document. The filter explains what each one measures and how to move the numbers.

Fundraising Tone Calibration

The target voice after filtering. Confident, not arrogant. Direct, not curt. Warm without tipping into sentiment. Includes tone tests for appeals, donor letters, and grant proposals.

Six years as Director of Development at a pediatric skilled nursing facility in Delaware. $13.8 million raised across 3,625 gifts. Built the development program from an empty desk and a Rolodex nobody had updated since 2014.

Kyle built this filter because he knew what good donor writing sounded like before AI existed. He could hear when it didn't. Six years of writing appeals, grant narratives, and thank-you letters for real donors produced the banned word list, the structural flags, and the tone calibration inside it. The detection science confirms what the writing instinct already caught. You get it free.
